Gyaros: an important recognition of our work from the EU

Posted on October, 23 2025

A project more than 12 years in the making — the installation and operation of an integrated remote monitoring system for the Gyaros Marine Protected Area (MPA) — has been recognized by the European Union as a good practice example for all of Europe!

This is a multi-layered project that we managed from design to installation and evaluation of its effectiveness, up to its handover to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA) for the future management of the MPA.

The installation of the Remote Monitoring System in the Gyaros MPA was a particularly demanding undertaking, due to the area’s isolation, lack of infrastructure, and the need for simultaneous technical work in different locations (Gyaros and Syros). Every step was accompanied by detailed technical specifications, realistic cost–time assessments, and forecasts for potential obstacles and risks. The experience highlighted the importance of strict adherence to protocols while maintaining flexibility in the face of unpredictable challenges.

You can learn more from the two Good Practice Guides (in Greek), which compile the conclusions and lessons learned from the organization’s decade-long involvement in the Gyaros area.

This recognition is a tangible confirmation that collaboration, innovation, and dedication to nature conservation can lead to meaningful and lasting results — not only for Gyaros and Greece, but for all of Europe.

We now await the issuance of the expected Presidential Decree, which will establish a permanent legal framework for protection, ensuring significant benefits for both the environment and local communities!
